Diagram of dental crowns with varying placementA broken tooth can present many challenges, from discomfort and sensitivity to difficulty eating and speaking properly. Dental crowns are one option to help you get back on track, protecting your natural teeth while helping to restore lost function and improve your overall oral health by allowing you to chew food properly. Most people do not understand how crowns work, but luckily our dentist here at Gresham Dental Excellence can help you understand everything you need to know about dental crowns. We will also see if it is possible to get a crown on your teeth, depending on your current dental condition.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a damaged tooth. There are several reasons you might have your tooth crowned, such as to protect it from further damage, because there is decay underneath it, or if you want to change its shape. Our dentists will examine your teeth and determine if dental crowns are the best solution to fix your teeth. However, certain conditions must be met for you to get a dental crown. For example, if your teeth are damaged beyond repair, you may not qualify for a dental crown unless you get a dental implant.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are two types of crowns: porcelain and gold. Both crowns are strong and durable, but dentists usually prefer to use porcelain crowns since they look and feel more natural than gold crowns. The decision between one or the other depends on your budget and your dental health in general. There are also other dental crowns you can choose from, including porcelain fused to metal, EMax crowns, and zirconia crowns.

People with weak teeth are usually advised to pick durable and strong crowns like porcelain and gold. But if your teeth are not prone to breakages, you can always opt for porcelain fused to metal crowns.

What Happens During a Dental Crown Procedure?

It can take anywhere from two to six weeks to get your crown installed. You will need to first schedule an appointment with the dentist and we will then determine whether you are a good candidate for treatment with dental crowns. If so, we will have you come back on another day to get impressions of your teeth, which involves using an acrylic material to create a mold of your teeth. We will then put temporary crowns on your teeth so they can protect your teeth while you wait for the permanent crowns. Also, your dentist will inspect your mouth and teeth to make sure you have no dental issues before beginning the procedure.

After Care

Dental crowns can easily stain when they are neglected. It is recommended that you take care of them like your natural teeth. Brush, floss, and visit the dentist regularly. We can also give you additional tips on ensuring your crowns stay strong and clean. Come in to Gresham Dental Excellence to get the best dental services.
